What is Reiki?

Reiki is a hands-on healing technique utilizing the world’s energy force to restore balance in living systems. Reiki is known to help heal physical, emotional and the spiritual and has no boundaries between time and space.

Reiki Symbol

Reiki was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s in Japan, although (was named differently prior to Mikao Usui) has been practiced for thousands of years by Buddhist’s in India, Nepal and Tibet.

Reiki is pronounced as ‘Ray-Key’ and is a Japanese word

Rei – means “universal” and refers to the spiritual and the soul. Universal refers to many ideas varying from the mundane to the highly esoteric.

Ki – means “life force energy” which flows through all that is. This is the non-physical energy that animates all living beings. Each and every living being needs this energy force to maintain living as a car needs gas to run (or hopefully soon only electricity)

As living beings we never want to deplete or run low on our fuel, or energy and Reiki is a tool to help balance our energy flow and restore full functionality.

The practice of Reiki as a healing system involves 2 entites. The first being the practitioner which must be attuned (see below), or taught how to help guide this universal energy and the second a cause. A cause can vary from a living being, a particular pain, an idea of healing such as a particular war to end, an emotional blockage, or any cause that does not have balanced energy.

Simple ideas of Reiki -

1. Reiki can never cause harm – Because Reiki is spiritually guided or universally guided, it is praticed for good intentions alone.

2. Reiki never depletes the energy of the practioner – The reiki practioner is not the one to heal but seen as a tool to help guide and focus the universal energy. We can sometimes see a practitioner as a magnet or funnel to help direct needed energy to a particular cause.

3. Reiki can be given to oneself as well as others

4. Universal energy has its own consciousness and helps guide itself with the practioners help.

5. Reiki helps treats physical, emotional and spiritual problems over time and space. There are no boundaries.

6. Reiki can be complimentary – Utilizing multiple avenues of healing in addition to conventional medicine or other alternative medicine can only strengthen the healing process.

Attunements -

The ability to give Reiki is taught from teacher to student. Anyone can give Reiki but must be attuned or “unlocked”. An attunement is a powerful spiritual experience which attunes or puts one in sync with Reiki and universal energy.

The Reiki attunement starts a complete cleaning process inside and affects the body as well as emotional and spiritual aspects. Thus for 21 days after the completion of attunements, the self is in a purification process, and must refrain from harmful substances (such as smoking, eating processed foods ,drinking, etc.) and should support the cleansing period with great sleeping habits as well as supporting his or her inner self.

How does Reiki heal?

Reiki is an easy healing technique to use. After the practitioner has been attuned, he or she assists in the flow of energy to the low energy areas. A positive, loving energy works to balance the flow and help the body, mind and soul grow and move forward with its true inner self and abilities. The practioner simply asks for the healing process to begin, typically through a meditative state or sub-medidative state through loving, compassionite and kindness intent through the practioner and onto the recipient’s needed area.

Reiki is divided into 3 levels of pratice (for practitioners)

1. Reiki I – The initial learning of Reiki including the first attunement and study of chakras and energy systems.

2. Reiki II – The continual support of the next step through a second attunement including utilizing symbols for a more powerful practice to assist healing with the emotional and over time and space.

3. Reiki III – The last step in Reiki teaches 2 additional symbols while supporting a practitioner to become a teacher.

To conclude I would like to mention below a daily mantra from Dr. Mikao Usui:

“Just for today, I will not be angry.”
“Just for today, I will not worry.”
“Just for today, I will do my work honestly.”
“Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbour and every living thing.”
“Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.”
